Inverted metallurgical microscopes are a special type of instrument used in the field of metallurgy and materials analysis. They consist of a microscope with epi-illumination, which is light coming through the objective. It is a reflected illumination, but the light originates from within the microscope body and is mirrored through the objective to the metallic specimen. This light is bright and even and has no shadows as might be seen with a normal stereoscopic microscope using reflected illumination from a microscope bulb mounted above the specimen.

A metallurgical microscope, also know as a metallographic microscope, comes in two main configurations. The most common is the inverted design where the microscope objectives are mounted below the stage and face upward. This is normally the desired type of microscope because the physical size constraints of the specimen are not present compared to the upright metallographic microscope.

An upright metallurgical microscope can only fit a relatively small specimen between the microscope objective and the stage. Most inverted metallurgical microscopes have a wide open stage allowing a variety of metallic specimens to be examined, from small to large. A simple coin can easily be inspected under high power magnification and epi illumination to reveal the metal gran structures and micro scratches.

Applications in industrial use vary. They may be used in a metal working foundry for examining polished specimens of metal castings for voids and inclusions. They may also be the tool of choice for inspecting polished metal samples in a metal heat treating facility for identifying metal grain structures and confirming the heat treating processes. A stereo microscope is considered a low power microscope and is not able to view more detailed microscopic structures as the inverted metallurgical microscope can.

Different types of these microscopes offers a variety of options. For example, polarizing light can be incorporated, allowing both plane polarization and cross polarization if two polarizing filters are utilized. The use of polarization in metallurgical microscopy allows for clearer examination of surface defects such as scratches on a bright shiny surface.
